Access

 

There are many points to access the park, which include two car parks and links with a number of other local green spaces:

Squadrons Approach, Hornchurch. RM12 6TS.

Suttons Lane, Hornchurch.

Public transport and car parking

 

Hornchurch Country Park can be reached by several bus routes, including the 256 which passes Hornchurch underground station (District Line) and terminates at St George's Hospital on Suttons Lane - a short walk away from the park's main car park. Route 252 towards Hornchurch town centre also stops here, or you can access the park using the 165, 365 or 372 which stop on South End Road. From here it's just a short walk back to the Albyns Farm entrance to the park by the fishing lake.

 

There is a large free car park at Squadrons Approach, and a second, smaller one off of South End Road at Albyns Farm.

 

The former RAF Hornchurch base was used during the First and Second World Wars. Squadrons of Spitfires based here played an important role protecting London during the Battle of Britain.  Various artefacts and relics of the site’s RAF history are still visible from within the park including an aircraft dispersal bay, pillboxes, and Tett turrets.

A designated Local Nature Reserve, the park is an integral part of the Ingrebourne Valley which is rich in wildlife and has good opportunities for bird watching. ​The marshes (containing the largest freshwater reed bed in London) is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The park has open areas of grassland for informal recreation and a lake which can be used for fishing.

 

The play area includes a model Spitfire which is used as climbing equipment.  For those visitors who wish to exercise then there is an outdoor gym and ‘trim-trail’ which extends throughout the park.

 

Hornchurch Country Park directly joins several other local green spaces - Ingrebourne Hill, Berwick Woods, Berwick Glades and the Hacton/Gaynes Parkway.
